Access Information: Rose Narrowboats Ltd
Introduction
Rose Narrowboats is based at Stretton under Fosse, on the Oxford Canal, a narrow canal in the heart of rural Warwickshire. We offer hire cruisers for weekends, short breaks, weekly and longer periods. We also have one boat for day hire.
Most of the country’s narrow canals were built during the Industrial Revolution, to proportions which these days may seem quite small.
As a result, the boats’ dimensions are restricted to about six feet ten inches in width. This does mean that narrowboats may not be suitable for those with very restricted mobility.
At our boatyard there is a chandlery shop, which also sells groceries and gifts. The chandlery is partly accessible, and our staff members are available to assist in there on request. There is a fully accessible WC on site.
Please contact us for detailed information, on the boats , their facilities or equipment, for advice on particular requirements, or to arrange a viewing if this would be helpful to you.
Literature can be made available in large print upon request.
Pre-arrival
Please telephone 01788 832449 for all your enquiries or e-mail us on [email protected]
Arrival and Car Parking
Car parking is available on site. For customers with limited mobility, our staff will ensure that you are placed as close as possible to the boat, both for drop off and longer term parking.
Reception
There is one step and a raised threshold to the main reception area, through an inwards opening door.
Lighting is uniform.
Public Areas – WC and Shop
On site, there is chandlery shop, which also sells groceries and gifts. The chandlery is partly accessible, and our staff members are available to assist in there on request. The grocery and gift shop are accessed through an inwards opening door, and lighting is uniform throughout. From here, two steps, marked by contrasting tape, lead to the chandlery.
There is a fully accessible WC on site, within the car park. Access to the WC is via an outwards opening door.
Narrowboats
The overall dimensions of narrowboats are governed by the size of the canals and their locks. This restriction on available accommodation space does mean that the boats’ interiors may be difficult to negotiate for people with limited mobility. The use of walking planks may be necessary for boarding and disembarking from the boats in some locations. To reach the inside of all of our boats, the use of some steps is necessary.
We have a fleet of hire narrowboats, which have a variety of layouts. If you require specific information on any individual boat, please telephone us, or fax or e-mail your enquiry. Some boats are available for those who wish to take a pet or assistance dog with them. Other boats are kept free of animals for the benefit of those who require a permanently pet-free environment.
Signage on all of the boats is clearly printed. Boat manuals in large print can be provided upon request
Narrowboat Equipment
All of our boats have radios and CD players (some with remote controls). All of the boats have televisions with remote controls. Some boats have a hard floor covering, and others are fitted with carpet. Some of our boats have variation in the levels of the floor.
There is good colour definition between floors and walls, and of seating areas. Interior lighting is flexible, with some task lighting. Reading lights are installed above all of the beds and bunks and there is deck lighting on some of the boats.
Heating on the boats is thermostatically controlled. A limited 230 volt power supply is available on all boats.
All bedding and bed linen is supplied, and the beds are made up ready for use (except for those where the saloon seating converts to a bed). Extra bed linen and pillows are available free of charge upon request, as are cot-sides.
Self Catering Galley
The interior layout of the galleys varies from boat to boat, but all have a full sized gas cooker with oven, and sink with hot and cold running water. All boats have full sized under counter refrigerators with a small freezer compartment.
All crockery, cutlery, glassware, cooking utensils and saucepans are provided, together with cleaning equipment.
An inventory can be seen here.
Bathroom, Shower Room and WC
Facilities vary from boat to boat, dependent largely upon the size of the boat. Most boats have showers with raised shower trays, rather than baths. All have wash hand basins and flush toilets, and non- slip floor covering. There are conventional turn taps on all of the boats and a radiator or heated towel rail in the larger bathrooms.
Grounds and Gardens
Rose Narrow Boats Ltd is a working boatyard, and consequently, for health and safety reasons, access to some areas is restricted.
With the exception of the entrance drive which is gravelled, surfaces are of either concrete or tarmac. There is some outside seating available.
The canal runs along the whole length of the boatyard, and is not fenced or guarded at the water’s edge. Naturally growing vegetation may obscure the water line.
Additional Information
Whilst the navigation authority is working towards making the canals’ built environment more accessible, there will always be hazards associated with canal navigation, such as steps, changes in levels, uneven surfaces, ropes and bollards, lock chambers, sluice chambers, weirs, culverts, lock operating mechanisms and the water itself.
Future Plans
We welcome your feedback to help us to continuously improve our business’s provision for its customers. If you have any comments or helpful suggestions, please contact us.
